Rebecca Firlit is a 39-year-old mom who has been denied the custody of her 11-year-old son because she’s not vaccinated against Covid-19.
Namely, the judge ruled that she posed a risk to her son, and revoked her custody until she gets vaccinated.
Matthew Duiven, the boy’s father, has been vaccinated, so the judge awarded custody to him. Rebecca, on the other side, still hasn’t been vaccinated, citing her adverse reactions to vaccines in the past.
The ex-couple has had shared custody of their son for seven years now, but the judge in Cook County court revoked her custody citing safety issues.
Her attorney is now alleging the act was an overreach from the judge.
Firlit told the judge that she wasn’t vaccinated because she had suffered adverse reactions to vaccines in the past, and as a result, she was advised by a doctor not to get the Covid-19 vaccine.
However, Cook County Judge James Shapiro ruled that the mom could not see her 11-year-old son until she got the vaccine, and awarded custody to the boy’s father who has been vaccinated.
Firlit’s attorney has since filed a petition to appeal the judge’s decision and stated that the ruling was an overreach.
What surprised the mom the most was the fact that the August 10 hearin wasn’t about revising the custody agreement, but it was supposed to be about expenses and child support. However, the first question the judge asked was whether she was vaccinated, and when she told him that she’s not, he revoked her custody.
