Conspiracy theories are as old as time – and it seems like there’s no way to go around them. There will always be people that believe in conspiracy theories, but what exactly makes people believe in them?
Well, psychology educator David Hundsness, who also holds a BA in Psychology from the University of California recently took it to TikTok to explain why people fall for conspiracy theories, and how do conspiracy theorists do that.
In the first video of the series, he asked if we have ever wondered why so many people fall for conspiracy theories.
“In spite of all the evidence available, it’s just weird that so many people choose to go with ‘alternative’ facts about COVID, vaccines, the 2020 election, the moon landing, and so on. And when you think about it, it’s even weirder that they make this choice knowing that others are going to mock them and argue with them and call them stupid. So, why would anyone make that choice when it’s so much easier to go along with the majority? They must be getting something out of that decision, so what is it?” – he continued.
4 reasons people fall for conspiracy theories.

Then he went on to explain why ego is such an important factor when it comes to conspiracy theories:
Ego is mainly why people fall for conspiracy theories.

And lack of information:

So, there you have it. No, people that believe in conspiracy theories aren’t necessarily ‘dumb’ or incapable of understanding reason and facts. In fact, it’s much more than that. So, the next time you’re arguing with a conspiracy theorist, remember these 4 reasons.
