Adele found herself at the center of an unusual gender-identity row after she appeared to take aim at the ‘genderless’ Brit Awards. Namely, at the 2022 Brit Awards, male and female categories were scrapped for the first time, but she unapologetically declared that she loves being a woman.
She picked up the Artist of the Year award and said:
‘I love being an artist I really do, and I genuinely can’t believe that it’s my job. Also, I would say, I understand why the name of this award has changed but I really love being a woman and being a female artist. I do. I’m really proud of us, I really, really am.’
Many fans praised her for that, and among them was a trans teacher.
Adele found herself at the center of a storm between trans rights activists and feminists, and while some vowed to boycott her music, others praised her stance. For example, British trans high school teacher Debie Hayton said that Adele’s message to women and girls was inspirational.
‘Here was a woman — who has sold tens of millions of albums — telling the world she was proud to be a woman. That’s something to celebrate, not condemn’ – she added.
Despite the controversy, publicists who have represented some of the biggest stars say that Adele’s stance on the genderless Brit Awards will be good for her career.
Although she might have upset her record label bosses, no one has the power to ‘cancel’ her while she’s still the world’s top selling artists, and let’s face it – regardless of what you think on her stance and her speech – we all love her music!
