A synagogue sues the state of Florida for restricting abortions and thus overstepping religious freedoms.
Jewish law states that ‘abortion is required if necessary to protect the health, mental, or physical well-being of a pregnant woman’.
According to a South Florida congregation, the state law which restricts abortions goes against their religious freedom. The news comes after governor Ron DeSantis signed into law the bill that banned most abortions after 15 weeks.
Although Christian conservatives propel the movement, it now faces a challenge for potential overstepping of religious freedom.
Congregation L’Dor Va-Dor, which filed the lawsuit, is a progressive synagogue in Palm Beach County.
The lawsuit states that the act prohibits Jewish women from participating their faith free of government intrusion, which goes against their privacy rights and religious freedom.
It was filed in Leon County Circuit Court, and it states that people who do not share the religious views reflected in the act will suffer.
Many reproductive health providers, such as Planned Parenthood, have also filed lawsuits to block that law that will come into effect from July 1, and it’s likely that the lawsuits will be consolidated with a hearing in the next two weeks.
According to DeSantis’ office, the law will ultimately withstand all legal challenges.
